What Is Exempt From Garnishment?
Exemptions fall into two groups: income that creditors cannot reach, and property they cannot take. Federal benefits, most public assistance, and the portion of wages above the statutory cap are protected income. Your home, a vehicle, household goods, tools of your trade, and retirement accounts are the property most often protected. Almost all of it is set by state law, and most of it requires you to claim it.
